Marko Batic

How did you come to know about the opportunity to join InBetween Project’s Consortium?
PUPIN was one of the core partners working on the proposal preparation and consortium assembling, where we primarily leveraged our acquaintances from previous EU research projects.

Why did you decide to join InBetween project’s consortium?
I believed that we could contribute to the project with our previous experience and know-how in ICT enabled automation and energy management and, gain new knowledge through international cooperation and technology demonstration at European level.

Is it the first time that you are working for a H2020 research project? If no, was your previous experience useful for the development of InBetween? How?
No, I have been inovlved in EU research projects since 2010. Indeed, working on EU research projects was essential to developing products and services which could be exploited not only commercially but also for further research. In particular, previoulsy developed ICT solutions for managamanet of hybrid energy systems served as basis for devleopment of InBetween advance energy services while our previous IoT experience paved the way for the InBetween cloud based infrastructure.

What do you like the most about the fact of being part of an international partnership?
Primarily, this implies a possibility to learn and work together with Europe’s top institutions and thus build our own capacity and expertise from their excellence. Moreover, the diversity among the involved nations and cultures and their approach to research and development activities bring an out-of-the box way of thinking for the entire consortium.

Concerning InBetween, what’s your main role in the project?
PUPIN is technical coordinator of the project and I am personally coordinating its activities. From the development perspective, my team have perhaps the most interesting responsibility of designing and developing majority of InBetween advance energy services. However, this great honor comes with the great responsibility and expectations that we will be able to meet the project’s ambitious targets.

Concerning the project’s impacts, what’s your main role? What are you doing to assure energy savings/ what are you doing to assure energy behavioral change?
Being involved in design and development of InBetween advance energy services puts me and my team in the focus of reaching project’s impacts and objectives. In terms of reaching energy savings and inducing behavioral change, we have defined the three main use cases for the InBetween platform and initiated the development of the corresponding services:
1. Reduction of energy wastes – by detecting wasteful practices through cross-correlation of information about operating heating/cooling systems and lighting devices with ambient and occupancy sensing.
2. Optimal energy infrastructure operation – by optimally satisfying requested energy demand based on information about available energy assets and dynamic energy pricing context, forecast of local generation etc.
3. Evaluate performance and benchmark – by periodically assessing energy performance and raising awareness through benchmarking with similar/neighbouring end users.
